rice is grown mainly in asia and some parts of europe but china is the world's biggest producer. in this rice growing world yuan longping, who was known as “the student who asked questions” at school, is important. he studied agriculture at college and began experimenting with crop breeding as a young teacher. he concluded that the only way to feed people was by crossing different rice plants to produce a higher yielding plant. as a result of yuan longping's work, china's rice production rose by nearly 50% in the 1990s, freeing up land to be used for other crops. yuan longpping's hybrid rice has also been exported to other countries such as pakistan and the philippines increasing their rice production too.
